“Aloha Reef Bowl #800 ~ Original”

Relief Carved Milo Bowl with Koa Base | 8.5" Height x 14" diameter | Original

In 2025, The "Aloha Reef Bowl #800" was awarded 'Best in Show' by Volcano Art Center and Nalu Builds.  This relief carved vessel was created out of a Milo Log from which 4 previous bowls were carved.  In the Lathe Turning World, it is considered a "nesting set", meaning that the first bowl was taken out of the center of this vessel using a One Way Bowl Saver Tool.
The vessel that you now have is the 5th Relief Carved Vessel that the artist has turned and sculpted.  The inspiration to teach himself Relief Carving came from seeing the Relief Carved walls at Angkor Wat in Cambodia.  The "ah-ha moment" came when Mydock determined to create relief carving on a wooden vessel.  It is an intense" labor-of-love" process to which the artist dedicated over 100 hours of turning, sculpting, carving, burning, sanding, and polishing.  Mydock intends to do more relief carving in the future, however these will be few and far between because of the time required to manifest iconic works of art like this one.  The design was further inspired by snorkeling in the teal blue ocean water of Hawai'i.
As a master artist in the areas of detailed drawing, woodworking and finishing, Mydock creates exquisite works which meld such techniques as wood turning, carving, pyrography, brilliant application of color and finishing.  This work showcases his skill with extremely intricate and unique elements you won't find duplicated elsewhere.
